The Huertas neighbourhood, with Calle Huertas running through the middle, is one of the oldest areas of Madrid. Although its official name is Las Cortes, it takes its popular name (Huertas) from the former vegetable gardens in the area. It is also known as the Barrio de las Letras, since it was home to a number of emblematic Spanish writers such as Cervantes, Quevedo and Lope de Vega. Its intellectual tradition stretches back a long way and can still be felt today. If you rent accommodation by days in Huertas, you’ll find literary quotations by writers from the Spanish Golden Age engraved on the pavement in golden letters as you stroll along its streets.

Huertas is in the heart of Madrid, with side streets full of cafes, restaurants serving food from all over the world, bars playing live music and classy cocktail bars. If you want to sample the local tapas bars and nightlife, check out our apartments in Madrid in Huertas. Get a real taste for the city in this lively neighbourhood.

Huertas was also the first area in Madrid to ban vehicles (except for residents), making it a fully pedestrian area. It is lovely to stroll along its quiet streets as you admire its beautiful buildings and renovated old mansions, including the 16th-century Palacio de Santoña, now home to the Madrid Chamber of Commerce.

Another charming spot is Plaza de Santa Ana, full of beerhouses, cafes and terraces much loved by locals and tourists alike. You’ll also find the famous Teatro Español and other attractive old buildings.

Another must-see if you rent one of our apartments in Madrid Huertas is Calle Lope de Vega, home to the 17th-century Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas de San Idelfonso, where Miguel de Cervantes is buried. Close by is the Casa Museo Lope de Vega, a picturesque house and garden where the famous Spanish writer lived and which has been restored to period style. Admission is free but you need to book in advance.

But there’s plenty more art in this area of Madrid. On the edge of the Huertas neighbourhood are the Museo del Prado, Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. Three absolutely key museums for any visit to Madrid with superb collections of art by the likes of Goya, Velázquez, Caravaggio, Rubens, Picasso, Gauguin and Mondrian, among many others. A real joy for all art lovers. If you’re one of them, book your holiday accommodation in Huertas. And don’t miss CaixaForum, with its vertical garden and the many small galleries in the surrounding area.

Calle Huertas is also only a short walk away from the Congreso de los Diputados, the Fuente de Neptuno and the Puerta del Sol.

Huertas is a bohemian neighbourhood full of life, ideal for shopping and savouring fine food. You’ll find original boutiques, small bookshops, tasty delis, antique shops and other delights you won’t find elsewhere in Madrid. Book your apartment in Madrid in Huertas and enjoy one of the most attractive neighbourhoods in the city!
