Looking for accommodation on Gran Vía, Madrid? Check out our holiday apartments on the most famous avenue in the Spanish capital! Feel right at home in the very centre of Madrid, surrounded by stunning architecture and with plenty to do.
Gran Vía is the most famous avenue in Madrid, a thoroughfare connecting the east and west of the city. It runs from Calle de Alcalá to Plaza de España. Although there were already longstanding plans for this street, it was finally laid out between 1910 and 1931; the result was a superb architectural, tourist and commercial achievement. The creation of Gran Vía and the city’s first skyscrapers were a huge leap forward in the city’s modernisation.
Its first buildings reflect several architectural currents from the United States, leading to the magnificent view you can admire from your accommodation on Gran Vía in Madrid or by taking a stroll along it. These buildings include the Edificio de Telefónica, the first skyscraper in Spain, and the Edificio Metrópolis, with its slate dome topped with a striking statue of Winged Victory, surely one of the most spectacular buildings in Madrid. Other impressive buildings are the Casino Gran Vía and the Edificio España.
Plaza de Callao, at the heart of Gran Vía, is also home to several emblematic buildings, so look up as you stroll through it and you’ll see the Cine Callao, Palacio de la Prensa and the Art Deco Edificio Capitol, one of the city’s icons. Look out for the huge Schweppes sign, which has appeared in several Spanish films.
Gran Vía is also famous for its many cinemas and theatres, especially at the end of the street, between Callao and Plaza de España. This and its splendid New York–style buildings have given the area the nickname of the “Madrid Broadway” . Madrid is one of the leading cities in the world in terms of new musicals being premiered every year, as you can see along this fantastic avenue of multicoloured lights and huge posters. If you like taking in a show, book your apartment by days on Gran Vía.
All along Gran Vía you’ll find smaller streets leading off this avenue that are perfect for shopping. You’ll find fashion shops with the top international brands, department stores such as FNAC and El Corte Inglés and small shops with clothes for all tastes. Shopaholics will be in heaven!
If you like good food, Gran Vía also has a large number of typical Spanish and international restaurants, bars where you can savour Madrid tapas and a wide range of cafes. This bustling street never sleeps: it’s the nerve centre of all urban life in the city.
But that’s not all! If you book an apartment on Gran Vía in Madrid, you’ll be just a short walk away from Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Plaza de España and the Palacio Real. An unbeatable location for all the main sights in the centre of Madrid.
