What is there to see in Seville?
Seville is a feast of light and colour: a joyful atmosphere pervades every street between its magnificent historic buildings. Don’t miss the Torre del Oro, Seville Cathedral, with its famous Patio de los Naranjos and, of course, La Giralda! Other key sights in Seville are the unique Plaza de España and the Parque de María Luisa, made up partly of the gardens of the Palacio de San Telmo, a marvellous place for escaping from all the hustle and bustle.
The Reales Alcázares de Seville, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is an ideal place for losing yourself and taking in its beautiful gardens and palaces. If you want to learn more about the city’s history, visit the Archivo General de Indias de Sevilla!
Art lovers should visit the city’s museums. We recommend the Museo Arqueológico de Sevilla, with its famous Phoenician Treasure of El Carambolo, and the Museo de Bellas Artes, with works by world-class painters such as Murillo and Zurbarán, among others. The Fundación Amalio, house-museum of Amalio García del Moral, who painted a series of paintings of La Giralda, is also worth a visit, as is the modern Metropol Parasol, better known as the Setas de la Encarnación. This surprising building has great views over the city and the La Cartuja area.
The best place for a stroll is along the banks of the River Guadalquivir and the lively Triana neighbourhood, home to many artists and lots of shops selling Seville tiles y and other handcrafts. Calle Betis is perfect for enjoying the city at its most monumental and has lots of decent bars and restaurants. Make sure you walk down the Callejón de la Inquisición, with the remains of the old castle of the Spanish Inquisition.
Eating out in Seville
Andalusian cuisine is a hit all over Spain, especially its tapas! There are plenty of good bars and restaurants for eating out in Seville. In fact, you’ll be spoilt for choice! We can highly recommend trying hot or cold montaditos. The most typical one is the pringá with chorizo, bacon, morcilla and meat stew. Fried fish and baby squid are also very popular dishes. A refreshing gazpacho is perfect in summer, and with finely chopped cured ham, it’s amazing! The best Seville sandwich? El serranito! With grilled pork, green pepper, cured ham and sliced fresh tomato. And top of the stews is rabo de toro, with onion, garlic, a dash of wine and lots of bread for mopping it up!
If you want to try a typical Seville dessert, take note: don’t leave without trying its delicious tortas de aceite, one of the oldest traditional Seville cakes and pastries, made with aniseed and sesame seeds, among other ingredients. Pestiños are another star of Andalusian baking: dating back to Islamic Andalusia, they are very popular at Easter, Christmas and the rest of the year! Other favourites include torrijas, bread soaked in milk and wine, coated in egg, fried and drenched in honey. Irresistible! Cortadillos de cidra (with pumpkin jam) and mantecados and polvorones from the Estepa area are also popular in Seville and throughout Spain.
Shopping in Seville
There are lots of great options for shopping in Seville. With its wide variety of markets, shops and craft markets, the city is the ideal shopping destination. Foodies should head over to the Mercados de Abastos de Seville. The Mercado de la Encarnación, Mercado de Triana, Mercado del Arenal and Mercado de la Calle Feria, one of the most popular and traditional, are excellent for buying fresh produce. Every Thursday, Calle Feria puts on a classic antiques market where you can find all kinds of weird and wonderful objects. The only hard decision is choosing which second-hand market to visit! We recommend the Jewellery and Accessories Market in Calle Duque, the Art Market in the Plaza del Museo, the Mercadillo del Charco de la Pava on the Isla de la Cartuja, and the Stamp and Coin Market. Our favourites? The market in Paseo del Arte in Triana, every Saturday and Sunday by the River Guadalquivir, and the Zoco del Parque de María Luisa, with handicrafts, decoration, fashion, accessories and gourmet products every third Sunday of the month.
The most famous shopping streets in Seville are Sierpes and Tetuán, in the historic city centre, and Calle Feria, in the Macarena neighbourhood. You’ll find typical Seville handicrafts such as fans, guitars, ceramics, flamenco dresses, mantillas, jewellery, fine leather goods and lots more. If you’re looking for shoes, head for Calle Córdoba, also known as shoemakers’ street!
Seville by night
Going out at night in Seville is always a great idea, especially in summer! Sevillians take to the streets after sunset, when the temperature starts to fall. Nights in Seville tend to start with some tapas with friends on a terrace before heading off to hit the town. La Plaza del Salvador is a great place to start the night, as is the historic city centre. La Alfalfa and Calle Betis are popular party areas. There are also plenty of places for enjoying good flamenco shows in Seville.
If you’re looking for something more alternative, head over to the bohemian Alameda de Hércules, with lots of live music venues, including Naima Café Jazz, La Caja Negra, Fun Club, Malandar and 1987. The Paseo de Colón is also good for going out and Bar Dadá and Kiosco Zaratrusta are perfect for having a drink. If you’re in the Triana neighbourhood, pop into the Sala Flamenco to hear authentic flamenco pop. If you want to hit the dancefloor, the Antique Theatro, housed in one of the Expo ’92 pavilions, is one of the most famous nightclubs in Seville. Its Rosso summer terrace is a marvel. If you’re heading home when the sun is coming up, try some calentitos, fritters known as churros in the rest of Spain. The perfect way to finish off the night!
Visiting Seville with kids
Travelling to Seville with kids is a great option, as there are lots of places and experiences for children to enjoy. It’s the perfect destination for a family holiday! The Isla Mágica Theme Park is wonderful for young children and adults and includes Agua Mágica, with swimming pools and slides in summer. The Alameda de Hércules games area and the Metropol Parasol children’s park are other fine options and boast stunning views. Hiring a rowing boat in Plaza España is also great fun with kids, as is hiring a bike in Parque de María Luisa. If they like animals, they’ll love the Seville Aquarium, with over 400 species of aquatic animals and inspired by Ferdinand Magellan’s exploration of the Pacific Ocean. Other favourites with kids are the Casa de la Ciencia-CSIC and the Pabellón de la Navegación and Torre de Schlinder.
The weather in Seville
The climate in Seville is subtropical/Mediterranean with variable rainfall. It has the highest annual average temperature in continental Europe at 19.2 °C. It has dry, very hot summers, when the temperature can hit 40 ºC, so it is important to drink plenty of water and take the necessary precautions in summer. Winters in Seville are mild, sometimes wet, but very pleasant. It rarely snows. The important thing is that the city is beautiful all year round!
When is the best time of year to visit Seville?
The isn’t really a best time of year to visit Seville, although summer can be a bit intense if you’re not used to the heat. However, its streets are bustling then and the summer concerts at the Alcázar are quite exceptional. Spring in Seville is marvellous! With mild temperatures, trees in blossom and two of the major events of the year: the April Fair, full of fun, colour and light, and Easter Week, with its world-famous processions. Autumn in Seville is great for its lovely colours and range of sweets eaten for All Saints’ Day, including its famous pestiños. And what about winter in Seville? It’s a magical time of year, with mild temperatures and Christmas markets. We recommend the Mercado Navideño de Artesanía de Seville, the Feria del Belén, the Artesanas a la Fuga Market and the Mercado Navideño Seville Nervión. In addition, the main squares in Seville have huge decorated trees and its streets are lit up to create a marvellous atmosphere!
What is there to see near Seville?
There are lots of things to see near Seville. Only 8 km from the city centre are the Roman Ruins of Italica, birthplace of the Emperors Trajan and Hadrian. The town of Écija, known as the town of towers and only 86 km from Seville, is also worth a visit. Halfway between Seville and Málaga is the town of Ronda, one of the most beautiful towns in the whole of Andalusia. From Seville you can also travel easily to Rocío, Matalascañas beach or the famous Parque de Doñana, with over 300 species of wild birds and up to 37 species of mammals, including the Iberian lynx.
