The first thing many visitors to Barcelona see is the city’s main railway station: Barcelona Sants. The surrounding neighbourhood of Sants may not be the city’s most famous area, but it’s full of charm and has some great places. Not surprisingly, it has excellent transport connections. We certainly recommend renting one of our holiday apartments in Sants if you’re travelling as a family or here on business.
Sants was an independent town until the late 19th century, when it was absorbed into Barcelona, and it still retains its own independent character. It’s now a quiet residential neighbourhood with several Modernista buildings, and a number of parks and pedestrian streets. Discover its charms from your accommodation in Sants.
Its industrial past can still be seen in buildings like Vapor Vell and Can Batlló, a former textile factory now run as a self-managed social centre. What is now the Parc de l’Espanya Industrial, right next to Barcelona Sants station, was also once a textile company. This park’s layout was inspired by the four elements: water, air, earth and fire. You can take a rowing boat out on its artificial lake and admire the tall towers that light it up at night, not forgetting the dragon sculpture, which is also a slide. Don’t miss it if you’re on a family holiday in Sants!
Another must once you’ve booked your accommodation in Sants is Plaça d’Osca, where you can soak up the sun and savour some tasty tapas, since this square is full of terrace cafes and restaurants and surrounded by narrow pedestrian streets. It’s also one of the area’s nightlife hubs.
However, the real heart of the neighbourhood is Carretera de Sants, a long, lively street with more than 300 shops that runs through the neighbourhood from L’Hospitalet de Llobregat to Plaça d’Espanya, so by renting one of our apartments in Barcelona close to Sants station, you’re within easy walking distance of Plaça d’ Espanya, home to the Fira de Barcelona, Montjuïc Magic Fountain, Poble Espanyol and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), all well worth a visit during your stay in Barcelona.
Sants is also famous for its festa major, held every year at the end of August. Don’t miss it if you’re in town at the time. During these festivities, the locals decorate their streets and organise lots of open-air activities, including concerts, neighbourhood meals, children’s activities and traditional performances such as sardanes.
