Plaça d’Espanya is one of the city’s main hubs, where two major thoroughfares meet: Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes and Avinguda del Paral•lel. But it also has a charm of its own. The surrounding buildings were laid out for the 1929 World Fair and designed by a number of renowned architects, including Josep Puig i Cadafalch and Guillem Busquets. Josep Maria Jujol designed the huge Three Rivers Fountain at its centre, decorated with Corinthian columns, figures and statues representing the three major rivers on the Iberian Peninsula. The lovely Venetian Towers stand at the entrance to Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, which leads up towards Mount Montjuïc. You can admire the whole view from one of our holiday rentals in Barcelona Plaça d’Espanya.
Right next to the square is one of the venues of the Fira de Barcelona, housed in former World Fair buildings. Its semicircular design with baroque columns recalls Saint Peter’s square in Venice. The surrounding architecture takes you back to the early 20th century and the excitement of the World Fair. Discover it for yourself by renting your holiday apartment in Plaça d’Espanya in Barcelona!
One of the most striking buildings in Plaça d’Espanya is Las Arenas shopping centre, with an original façade in Neo-Mudéjar style. It was built in 1900 and was used as a bullring until 1977. In 2011 it reopened its doors to the public as a striking 30,000 m² shopping centre with a wide variety of shops, restaurants and cinema. Its rooftop terrace offers superb 360° views.
