What to Eat in Tarifa

Going out for Tapas is the order of the day and of course due to Tarifa’s privileged location on the Atlantic coast, seafood. In almost all of the little villages and towns scattered around the coast you will find locals propped up at the bar of local restaurants and bars munching their way through Tortilla de Camarones, a recipe dating back 500 years it is a mixture of shrimp, flour, onion and parsley which is then fried. Possibly the most popular dish in all Andalusia is, Pescaito Frito, similar to whitebait dipped in flour and fried. There are also a number of restaurants paying homage to Tarifa’s Moorish history serving delicious food from across the Strait of Gibraltar. Some of the best restaurants are Meson el PIcoteo, Casa Azul and Restaurante La Olla.

What to see in Tarifa

Tarifa offers the visitor a host of sights to see from the historical to the natural. The 10th century Castillo de Guzman overlooking the town of Tarifa is a great place to start a tour of Tarifa. For magnificent views of Africa take the stairs to the Mirador El Estrecho which is located on the castle walls, form there you can see Gibraltar and Jebel Musa across the strait. The winding streets of the Old Town of Tarifa are reminiscent of Morocco and are filled with small shops and markets.

For a truly nature inspired visits you can take a whale watching tour, you have the opportunity to see killer whales, sperm whales, fin whales and dolphins or visit the bird watching station where you can learn about the birds of the region from the helpful volunteers. If sightseeing and nature watching aren’t of any interest to you, you will definitely enjoy the long windswept beaches.

Shopping in Tarifa

The surf stores aside there are some very interesting little stores and markets in Tarifa. Small shops selling individual designs, accessories, hand made shoes and jewellery abound in the winding streets of the old town. Fresh food should be bought from the lively market in the Old Town; just watching the people go about their weekly shopping can be a fascinating experience. For fresh fish it is better to buy on Tuesday and Saturday as these are the days the fishermen supply the market with their latest catch. You’ll be pleasantly surprised of the quality and quantity of shops in Tarifa considering its relatively small size.

Kids activities in Tarifa

Tarifa is the wind and kite surfing capital of Spain, this means there a number of schools offering lessons to kids of all ages and abilities. All kinds of equipment is available for rent if the kids have picked up the hang of their chosen wind discipline. Club Mistral is one of the best schools in the region if you want to book your children in for some classes. There are also a large number of equestrian centres offering horse rides along the beach. Speaking of the beach it is probably the best options for kids of all ages; the waves aren’t too big; there are massive sand dunes to climb up and run down.

The children would also love going on a whale watching tour to see these massive marine mammals up close and personal.

Nightlife in Tarifa

The nightlife in Tarifa is absolutely amazing thanks to the huge number of kite and wind surfers who flock to the town. After a huge day on the water they like nothing better than a huge night on the town. The old town is full of bars where you can have some tapas before slipping it up a notch and moving off into the night. Some of the best bars in Tarifa are La Tribu, a laid back surf bar and Bear House, chilled out bar with sofas and sports on the big screen. Two of the best clubs in Tarifa are Café del Mar and la Ruina both great venues to dance until dawn.
