What to Eat in Sitges

The cuisine in Sitges is as diverse as the tourists who visit this beautiful coastal village. Catering to all budgets and tastes the diverse range includes Japanese, American, Asian, Indian, Mexican, Spanish and Catalan plus many more. However if there are two dishes which should be tried when you visit Sitges they are Paella and Xato. Paella could be considered Spain’s national dish and the quality and range in Sitges is unbelievable, it seems each restaurant has their own special variation of this classic. You can find great paella in any of the restaurants along the waterfront but judging by the crowded tables at lunch time the best can be found at the Santa Maria restaurant and La Taberna del Puerto. Accompany paella with the regional salad Xato, made of endive lettuce, tuna, cod, anchovies, green olives and romesco sauce.

Something to remember when looking for a restaurant in Sitges, it is quite common for people to eat late so don’t be surprised if you find the restaurant empty at 7pm. It isn’t a sign of a dodgy restaurant. Don’t order fish on a Monday as it is unlikely to be fresh instead wait until Tuesday when the restaurants have been supplied by the fishermen. Children are welcome at most if not all Spanish restaurants and there is usually a children’s menu and nearly all dishes come with a decent serving of chips.

What to See in Sitges

Apart from the beautiful bodies on the beach there are three museums in Sitges worth visiting Cau Ferrat, Maricel Museum and Romantic Museum. Cau Ferrat was the house/studio of artist Santaigo Rusiñol a leading figure in the Catalan Art Nouveau movement. The Palau Maricel houses an impressive collection of art including works by el Greco, Goya and Casas. Step back in time at the Romantic museum takes you on a journey through the 19th century; the vast interior of the mansion allows you to see how a wealthy family of the time lived.

Possibly Sitges’ best known and most loved attraction is the Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla church. Standing proudly atop a very small rise overlooking the sea it is clearly visible from the beach and promenade and is well worth visiting if only for some nice views of the sea and coast. Strolling along the promenade at sunset is another of Sitges’ star attractions.

Shopping in Sitges

Sitges is an upmarket tourist destination and this is reflected in the number of unique boutiques, chain stores and numerous stores selling designer labels, handicrafts, antiques and art. The shopping in Sitges is unusual in one respect and that is the men’s clothing shops are almost on par with the women’s boutiques. The majority of shops can be found in the centre of the village and surrounding streets.

Sitges also has several small supermarkets, a larger supermarket handily located next to the train station and a municipal market. The latter is the place to go to buy fresh fruit and vegetables; it is also an excellent place to stock up on some fresh caught fish or seafood. At the markets watch how the locals do it first before jumping in and remember to ask who the last person in line is “Quien es el ultimo?”

Sitges with Children

Sitges is a great place for a holiday with the children. During summer the beaches are filled with holidaying families and the laughter and screams of the children can be heard above the gently lapping waves. The shallow water and practically no tidal movement make the beach at Sitges quite safe for children. The best time to go to the beach in Sitges with children is in the morning, Spanish people don’t start arriving at the beach until 11am so before that there is plenty of space to spread out the towel and enjoy the calm.

Other activities the children can participate in are Horse Riding at El Rancho equestrian school and sailing at Club Nautic Sitges where they offer comprehensive lessons for all levels. A short distance away in Tarragona you can find the PortAventura theme park full of rollercoasters and other fear inducing rides, a good idea for an alternative daytrip from Sitges.

Sitges Nightlife

The nightlife in Sitges is hedonistic, lively, different and gay. The place to start off any night is along the famed “Calle de Pecado”(Sin Street) the narrow street is lined with bars, loud music thumps from the open doors and people spill out into the street drinks in hand. It doesn’t matter if you are gay or straight the place to start the night is here.

From here the two groups split up and head in separate directions, the gay fraternity usually head to either Carrer Bonaire or Carrer Sant Bonaventura where there are lots of gay bars, some with dark rooms and cruising areas, the most popular gay clubs are Organic and Trailer. Straight party goers can dance until dawn at the original Pacha nightclub or Sweet Pacha in Port Aiguadolç. Whatever your sexual orientation you should not miss a night out in Sitges.
