What to See in Salamanca

Art, culture and history combine to make Salamanca a fascinating tourist destination. Salamanca has seen many rulers over the centuries, Romans, Moors and Visigoths have all left their mark on the city. The more emblematic sights of the city are the University, Plaza Mayor and Cathedrals.

The Plaza Mayor is a magnificent example of Baroque Architecture. This square in the centre of Salamanca is the social hub. Lined with cafes and restaurants it is the place to go for a stroll or meet friends for a drink. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful squares in Spain.

One of the world’s oldest, the University of Salamanca is deservedly on the list of must sees. Magnificent architecture and the famous Spanish plateresque façade with a hidden frog, legend has it if you can find the frog without help you are guaranteed to be blessed with good luck. The book lined shelves of the library and the Casa de las Conchas are other star attractions of the University.

Salamanca’s two cathedrals are also well worth visiting, the old Cathedral, “Catedral Vieja” built in the Romanic and Gothic styles and the new Cathedral, “Catedral Nueva” built in the late Gothic and baroque. Both cathedrals are full of ornate carvings, exquisite decorations and chapels. Other sights in Salamnca worth seeing are La Salina Palace, Solis Palace and the Bull Ring.

Shopping in Salamanca

There are over 4,000 shops in Salamanca selling clothes, shoes, accessories, souvenirs, and local handcrafts. Most of the shops are in the streets surrounding the Plaza Mayor in Toro and Zamora streets here you can find high street chain stores and small boutiques. It is a pleasant stroll along the pedestrian streets window shopping and listening to the local buskers and street entertainers.

For souvenirs, head to the area between the Plaza and the Cathedrals. Buy some delicious cured meat products, local wines and fresh fruit and vegetables from the Central Market, housed in a beautiful modernist building. Head to the Tormes and Capuchinos shopping centre for everything under the one roof you can even take in a movie or just relax in one of the café’s or restaurants.

Salamanca for Kids

If you think there aren’t a lot of things for kids to do in Salamanca you are mistaken. Being a university there is a heavy emphasis on education any of the activities for children in Salamanca are based on this premise. Wander the streets of the old town looking for hidden gems like the frog on the University building or the monkey and stork on the door of the Cathedral.

The children will love the Art Nouveau and Art Deco museum which houses an interesting collection of dolls, robots and toys. Alternatively have a look at the more than 200 vehicles at the Automotive History Museum. Take the tourist train to discover the city or head to the river for a walk along its banks or take a leisurely cruise down the Tormes River aboard a river boat. Salamanca Nightlife

As you would expect in a town full of university students from Spain and around the World, the nightlife is amazing. Centred in the area around the Plaza Mayor and Gran Via the options are as wide and varied as the nationalities of the university students. After midnight all the bars are filed to overflowing and after three the action moves to the local nightclubs.

There is sure to be a bar and club to suit your style whether it is sophisticated or alternative. Some of the best places to go out in Salamanca are Moderno, Plutos and Camelot. The nightlife scene is orientated towards undergraduate students so sometimes it may be better to sit in the Plaza Mayor and observe the shenanigans whilst listening to some troubadours.
