Maps & Transport

Walking is definitely the best way to discover Rome. The historic centre of Rome is compact and manageable on foot and most of it is closed to normal traffic. If you are not in a hurry, we recommend taking a bus to a central area and then going for a little jaunt of your own.
You will avoid the annoying city traffic by adventuring down the narrow and beautiful cobbled streets. There is no chance you will not come across some beautiful hidden treasure…after all, this is the beauty of Rome!

Maps & Transport

  • PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Public transports in Rome include buses, trams, metro and suburban railway. This network is extensive and covers the whole city from 5.30am to midnight (metro to 11.30pm; on Saturdays to 00:30am). Night buses take over until about 5am covering the main routes. The metro only has two lines, but is the easiest and fastest way to get around and is convenient for several attractions. A single ticket, called a BIT, costs €1 and is valid for 75 minutes across the full range of services – but it includes only one metro journey. There are also possibilities to buy a daily pass for €4, three day pass for €11, 7 day pass for €30. Tickets must be purchased in advance from tickets counters, tobacconists or newsagents and must be validated before each journey. For more information visit the webpage of ATAC, the company which runs public transportation services in Rome

  • TAXI
Taxis are white with lights on the top to indicate whether they are available for hire. They'll generally stop when hailed; and there are strategically placed taxi ranks around town. If you need to order a taxi by phone you can call one of the following numbers: 06 3570, 06 4994, 06 6645, 06 5551 or 06 8822. Be aware that the meter starts running as soon as the call comes in, not when you get in the car.

  • CAR
Driving in Rome is not easy due to its numerous one-way streets and few parking lots in the city centre. Minimum age to hire a car is 21. You can find most of the car renting company’s at Fiumicino airport and Termini rail station.
