Eating Out in Majorca

In Recent years Majorca has become a great destination for food lovers. The food ranges from delicious paella eaten at a beachside restaurant to succulent roasts in the island’s interior. Majorcan cuisine is based on pork, seafood and vegetables and being part of Spain there is always a generous serving of olive oil and garlic.

Three typical Majorcan foods are ensaimada, a spiral pastry which is usually eaten for breakfast, Frit Mallorquí a vey popular dish containing either meat, fish and vegetables usually eaten for lunch and finally Sobrassada a deliciously soft chorizo style cured ham which is used as a spread. Of course in Majorca you can get typical Spanish cuisine such as tapas and the like at many of the restaurants. The best place to go out for some tapas in Majorca are La Llonja and Santa Catalina in Palma but just wandering the town of Palma’s old quarter you will come across many excellent restaurants.

What to see in Majorca

The natural beauty of Majorca is the principal draw card for visiting tourists, the beaches, rugged coastline and spectacular interior provide the opportunity for numerous activities. There is a lot more to see in Majorca than just the beach and surrounds.

In the town of Palma you will find the imposing Gothic Cathedral known as La Seu crowning the old quarter of the city. Works by Gaudi and Miquel Barcelo can be found in it interior. Close by is the Almudaina Royal Palace, built on Roman ruins it has been the Royal residence since the middle ages and is still used by the Spanish Royal family to this day. On the outskirts of Palma is Bellver Castle, a 14th century Gothic style castle built by King Jaime II today it houses the History Museum.

Natural sights of Majorca which are definitely worth visiting are the Drach Caves, the biggest on the island with striking rock formations and underground lakes. During summer classical music concerts are held in the interior of the cave. Cap de Formentor is possibly Majorca’s most picture perfect landscape. Shopping in Majorca

Shoppers will love shopping in Majorca; the small size of Palma makes it the perfect for an easy day shopping without having to move too far. The main shopping area in Palma is along Av. Jaume III, here you will find the popular Spanish chain stores Zara, Mango and many more shops selling clothing, accessories, jewellery, shoes and souvenirs. Step into one of the many winding side streets and you will find a plethora of boutique stores selling everything imaginable.

On most days of the week there are small markets occurring all over the island. Fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, cheese and household goods are all on sale. The markets start early and finish at lunch time so you will need to get up early to enjoy wandering the markets. If you are in Palma there are two indoor markets which are open daily, Olivar and Santa Catalina where you can pick up your food supplies. For all your shopping under the one roof head to Porto Pi shopping centre it has over 140 shops spread out over six levels.

Majorca with Kids

The kids will love going on holiday in Majorca. Apart from spending the day playing on the beach there are innumerable opportunities for children to enjoy themselves. Some of the most popular are:

Palma Aquarium- Experience the magic of the underwater world close up. There are over 700 different species of marine life including sharks, jellyfish and clownfish. During summer the aquarium organises children’s workshops.

Marineland- Featuring dolphin and sea lion shows this park also has exotic birds and an aquarium.

Aquacity El Arenal- An enormous water theme park featuring 16 slides, swimming pools, a surfing beach, rides and a heap more. Let the children get wet and wild.

Nightlife in Majorca

When the sun goes down Majorca likes to party, the night starts late and finishes when the sun comes up, so make sure you have a siesta to get ready for the long night ahead. Start off the evening in one of the trendy lounge bars enjoy a cocktail and watch the sun sink into the horizon. From there move to one of Palma’s restaurants and enjoy a delicious meal of tapas or something more substantial.

Party at a local bar before heading to some of the bigger clubs around Majorca like Pacha and BCM Planet Dance. For a more sophisticated relaxed evening try Deià and Sóller where you can find live music, quiet bars and occasionally some classical music. To step it up a notch but still in a controlled way there are some nice bars playing laid back tunes around Puerto Sóller. The nightlife in Majorca offers something for everyone you just have to find your spot.
