A subtle combination of retro pieces with more contemporary items

By bringing back to life a selection of retro style furniture and objects from the 50s, the owner has set up a place in complete harmony with some very old shops characteristic of the lower city area, with a special nod to Otra Face da Lua, a small boutique swarming with clothes, wallpaper, old time hats, and where you may enjoy a coffee or a light meal.

Located right in the middle of Rua Augusta, one of the most famous pedestrian street of the city, the Baixa Retro apartment is on the 2nd floor (

no elevator)

of a typical building of the Baixa Pombalina district, an area that was completely rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake following the initiative of the Marques de Pombal.

The apartment, which can accommodate up to 4 people, has two bedrooms and a complete bathroom with a shower. One of the rooms, which faces the street, has a double bed and a beautiful antique bergère armchair, whilst the second bedroom, without windows to the outside, has two single beds.
The lounge area offers guests a sofa and armchair set in the clean cut 50s style but entirely redone. Other objects of the same period will delight all those who are keen on the 50s, such as a little fridge that serves as a place for storage.
A very large fully equipped kitchen is to be found on the back side of the apartment. A cable-ready TV will allow you to catch a movie if you so wish.

The flat is equipped with WIFI wireless internet.

If you stay at the Baixa Retro enjoy all the nearby restaurants in the very street and walk to all you sightseeing around the city.

Baixa

The Baixa which means “downtown” is delimited by a hill on each side : Chiado and Bairro Alto on one side and the Castelo hill on the other side. Until the end of the XIXth century, the city was entirely dedicated to the trade business with the Indies. Any ship coming from the colonies would dock at Terreiro do Paço. It is in this same area that king D. Manuel ordered his Palace to be built in the XVIth century. But in 1755, an earthquake destroyed entirely this part of the city and it had to be reconstructed, following this time a geometric grid design for streets and squares. Trade activity always took place in the Praça do Comercio under the arcades, by the Tagus river bank, but nowadays it gave place to Ministries. From the square start several shopping streets, like the rua Augusta, a very busy pedestrian street with cafes and stores. The Baixa area stretches until Rossio, the most central square of the city, famous for its cafés, like café “Nicola” or the pastry “Suiça”, but also for its train station, a beautiful monumental building with a superb typical façade of Manuelin style, where all trains leave to Sintra.

Extremely well located. The owner was super friendly, helpful. Albana, Canada 19 May 2012

Location of the apartment was excellent! Liliana's recommendations and help were invaluable.
I think the bathroom needs some work. There is no ventilation system in the bathroom to allow steam from the shower to go out. Also, the tub leaks water onto the floor, and the tub drains slowly. There were also many insects in the bathroom (perhaps due to the water which leaks from the tub). Lastly, perhaps you can prepare a list of instructions on how to work the TVs.

Location, location, location ! ! On pedestrian street, two blocks from Metro station(Rossio), 3 blocks from the Rossio train station to Sintra, 3 blocks from tram stop to Belem, 2 blocks from Tram 28 stop, 3 blocks from Commercial Square, 2 blocks from the Elevador de Justa. Wonderful central location. Lots of reasonable restaurants on the three pedestrian streets. Owner met us at the apartment, provided lots of information and suggestions, recommended a great restaurant with typical Portguese food and also provided a welcoming bottle of wine ! It was a splendid place to stay for ourselves and two children. Kitchen was well equipped. Randy, Canada 10 May 2012

Het appartement is heel goed bevallen. Heel centraal gelegen, netjes/verzorgd en in een mooie jaren 50/60 stijl. Alles is heel goed bevallen. Jirin, Netherlands, the 09 May 2012

We were travelling with a 1 year old so the central location made it easy to explore Lisbon and allowed us to go back to the apartment and rest throughout the day. The apartment was very well equipped, would definitely recommend it. Tomaz was very helpful and his restaurant suggestions were great! Great kitchen!
The only draw back was that being on Rua Augusta (main pedestrian street), it was quite loud on the weekend night and a little hard falling asleep (only a concern if you are a light sleeper). But if you want a central location that's what you can expect. In fact we loved being able to street watch from our apartment window. Rua Augusta is very lively and fun to watch!

Superb spotin the middle of via Augusta, very strategic for visiting all parts of Lisboa. Close to all kinds of public transport. train to Sintra round the corner.Very friendly reception, with good restaurant tips. Nespresso coffeemachine and dishwasher. We walked to Amalfi everynight for having diner.next time Lisboa, i,ll bool this again for sure!
If you are a lite sleeper than you,d better take the middle room instead of the front one,for the weekend. In this room it is very quiet.

ja, perfecte ligging, check in met veel informatie. Johan, Netherlands, the 18 March 2012
