A sunny apartment right in the middle of Baixa

If you are looking for a centrally located apartment, close to restaurants and next to the shopping streets, select the Baixa apartment. From here everything is reachable on foot since all monuments and tourist points of interest are all around you. The Baixa district is the lower part of the city which unfortunately will not avoid some harsh walks up to the Castle or up to the Chiado, but the peaceful comfort of this elegant and bright apartment will help you relax from all those walkarounds in the seven hill city.

The apartment:

Located in a street parallel to the famous Rua Augusta, the Baixa apartment occupies the third floor

with no lift

of a typical building of this Baixa Pombalina district entirely reconstructed upon the Marquês de Pombal’s initiative after the 1755 earthquake.

A family or a group of friends will enjoy this large space comprising three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The decoration is modern, simple but warm with mirrors in almost every room. Two bedrooms come with a double bed and open to the backyard, the third bedroom features twin beds and is over the pedestrian street at the front. Both bathrooms are completely new with marble and equipped with spacious showers. A washing machine and a dryer are located in one of them..

The living room has large windows opening onto the pedestrian street downstairs and is furnished with two elegant beige sofas, in front of a large plasma TV set connected to hundreds of satellite channels. In a separate area stands a white marble table ready to accommodate a whole family for a meal in this ultra modern kitchen all equipped with the latest quality appliances. Unless you prefer going out to one of the numerous restaurants of the area…

The flat is air conditioned and equipped with WIFI wireless internet.

If you stay at the Baixa Apartment, don’t forget to try the breakfast (not before 10am !) in one of the many pastry shops around! In the evening, charge yourself and climb the Chiado hill to the Bairro Alto where you’ll find the true nightlife centre of the city.

Baixa

The Baixa which means “downtown” is delimited by a hill on each side : Chiado and Bairro Alto on one side and the Castelo hill on the other side. Until the end of the XIXth century, the city was entirely dedicated to the trade business with the Indies. Any ship coming from the colonies would dock at Terreiro do Paço. It is in this same area that king D. Manuel ordered his Palace to be built in the XVIth century. But in 1755, an earthquake destroyed entirely this part of the city and it had to be reconstructed, following this time a geometric grid design for streets and squares. Trade activity always took place in the Praça do Comercio under the arcades, by the Tagus river bank, but nowadays it gave place to Ministries. From the square start several shopping streets, like the rua Augusta, a very busy pedestrian street with cafes and stores. The Baixa area stretches until Rossio, the most central square of the city, famous for its cafés, like café “Nicola” or the pastry “Suiça”, but also for its train station, a beautiful monumental building with a superb typical façade of Manuelin style, where all trains leave to Sintra.

The location is excellent, even though it's in the heart of the city yet it was very quite.
The stairs is the killer, especially when we have heavy luggage, that is the reason why we won't book this again, if with a lift in store, definitely come back.

Apartment was clean, in a good position and well equipped.
Despite informing of our arrival at 2pm and phoning from the airport, we had to wait about 35 mins to be let in, although they were apologetic and helpful. Few english speaking sat TV channels and in some apartments we have rented there has been a guest book with useful comments. The above are really only small observations we enjoyed our stay, shame the weather wasn't better.
