A splendid apartment with a lovely garden right in the centre of the city

Lisbon still has of those lovely surprises! A quiet garden in the very centre of the city, a few steps away from the shopping streets and theatres of Chiado and very close to the animated area of Bairro Alto! But the Belas Artes Apartment has not only a garden to offer, its refined classical decoration and commodities are those which will make your trip in Portugal unforgettable.

The area surrounding the apartment:

The historical area of Chiado starts just after the narrow streets of Bairro Alto and goes down to the lower part of the city called Baixa, and reaches the banks of the Tagus river. It is one the best places in town with elegant buildings, theatres, the São Carlos opera house, historical cafés like A Brasileira and nice fashion boutiques. The location of the flat is ideal, at the same time one street away from the shopping zone of Chiado, the Garrett street, not too far from the narrow streets of Bairro Alto, but also so near of the Baixa in a five minute walk. In other words, you are here at the very centre of the city. If you simply look for restaurants, bars, night clubs or fado houses, go to Bairro Alto via Rua Garrett and the pretty Praça Luis Camões. Downwards walk in front of the 19th century Eiffel elevator down to the magnificient Rossio train station of Manuelin style which will be your linking point to Sintra; and after a 45 min journey you can spend a day visiting the Sintra area, its royal castles and parks. And if your prefer a museum, pickup a metro at the Baixa Chiado station and go to the Gulbenkian Museum in 10 minutes.

The apartment:

The Belas Artes apartment is a nicely decorated flat of classical style, with all the comfort and highest standards in equipment. The building is one those very elegant houses of the historical area, but completely restored and therefore it includes all modern facilities like elevators and underground garage (extra charge). Despite its situation on the first floor the apartment includes a lovely small garden with terrace, table, chairs and sunshade, blooming bougainvilleas and flowers. This is really one those hidden secrets of Lisbon : a green and sunny area in the very centre of the city where you will enjoy a deserved rest after your long walks in the streets and stairs of Lisbon. With its classical and good taste furniture, this property possesses all of the attributes of a high standard apartment, vast volumes, high ceiling and wooden floors.

The apartment features up to 4 people and comprises a bedroom with a 160cm bed and a large sofa bed in the living room. The bedroom is nicely decorated and very spacious, behind the curtains the windows open directly onto the garden. The bathroom is tiled with marble and comes with a tub, hair dryer, towels and linens.

The living room/dining room is a large reception room nicely decorated with wooden pieces of furniture, a plasma TV with cable channels and DVD, cosy sofas and a dining area. Wifi internet is available in this property.

With access to the garden, the kitchen is just like at home and is fully equipped with brand new appliances, ustensils and cookware. A welcome basket awaits you to avoid rush shopping on arrival.

In the summer, make use of air condioning in the main rooms and in the winter, central heating. Centralised stereo music radio is available in all rooms.

Whether you are in Lisbon for leisure of for business, the Belas Artes apartment, will offer you the best comfort for your stay, the ideal location for your walk abouts and the typical charm of Lisbon.

Chiado

The Chiado is a multi facet neighbourhood : at the same time historical with nice and elegant houses, shopping area with chic boutiques in rua Garrett and cultural centre of Lisbon with theatres, the São Carlos opera house and many historical cafes. Chiado spreads out from the Bairro Alto, next to Luis Camões Square or Largo do Carmo and goes downhill to reach the banks of the Tagus river or towards the Rossio Square in the lower part of the city. In other words, you are here at the very centre of the city, a district entirely rebuilt at the end of the 18th century after the earthquake and more recently after a huge fire in 1988. But the place is mostly known as a shopping area, go down the Garrett street towards Baica and Rossio Square. If you simply look for restaurants, bars, night clubs or fado houses in the Bairro Alto, you only have to climb the stairs, or if you prefer take the Gloria Funicular or even the 19th century Santa Justa elevator to the top of the hill. On the south slope, the Chiado goes down to the banks of the river called “Mar de Palha” (straw sea), next to the metro and train station of “Cais do Sodré” which will allow you to reach the beaches along the coast of Estoril or Cascais in about 45 minutes, unless you prefer to cross the Tagus using one of those typical boats called “Cacilheiro” from the Maritim Station. For food shopping, you’ll enjoy the market across the street with fresh fish coming right from the Setubal harbor, juicy fruits and fresh vegetables.

Frankly, everything. Teresa was great; on time and very accommodating, easy to reach and quick to respond. The apartment is the best by far I've rented on vacation. The location can't be beat. Clean, well equipped... everything was as you'd like it to be when renting short term.
This has nothing to do with the apartment itself, but at first it seemed very hard to locate a grocery store; this seems quite unique to Lisbon, as most cities have at least a convenience store on almost every corner; I'd asked both my driver from the airport and Teresa from Friendly and each had pointed to stores that were a good distance away; after a few days in the neighborhood we found a great grocery store (fairly new which is why it may have been unknown to those I'd asked), and organic as well. It is called Brio and is accessible from Rua Garrett immediately to the left of the clothing store Gardenia, up the stairs and escalator at the top, or from around the block off Travessa do Carmo. Just thought it might be nice to inform future renters of this. There is also another store fairly close on Rua Primeiro de Dezembro Teresa had told me of, but it's quite a bit farther and the walk home is all uphill. Brio is much, much closer, a nicer store, and an easy walk back home.

Location---in the middle of Lisbon with a garden. Unbelieveable. I was a guest there for 2 months. It was worth the price and I hope to stay there again.

All was as promised other than the wall safe was not working. All the equipment - washer/dryer, stove, A/C, etc. were high quality and worked well. Furniture, beds linens were all relatively new and of good quality. Brian, United States 20 October 2011

Apartment is in a wonderful position and is elegant and tastefully furnished. Our contact person, Teresa, was helpful and the welcome basket of goodies was appreciated. The garden is a great asset. We enjoyed our time there but felt there were some issues which needed to be resolved. Camille, Australia 29 September 2011

Everything in the apartment was very tasteful and of the best quality. We have stayed in apartments in Europe for many years now, and this was definitely the best that we have booked. Everything about the booking was extremely simple and the reponses to any questions were immediate. We loved it so much that we will definitely be there again next summer. The position in the Chiado was very good and although I am disabled the apartment and its position made it easy for me to cope. Many Thanks to Theresa she has provided an excellent example of the very best for visitors to Lisbon.
There is absolutly nothing that ANYONE could be negative about. You might want to consider a 6th category of EXCELLENT. All the characteristics I would have given would have received this from me.  Joyce Hoskison
