At doorstep of Alfama, a delicious mansion combining contemporary style and 18th century azulejos
With a resolutely contemporary decoration, the Alfama Jardim apartment will drop you into a mixed environment, at the same time modern and historical. The place used to be an ancient convent now converted into comfortable and elegant flats. At the doorsteps of Alfama, a city district which has changed so little since the 17th century, and also a hundred meters away fron the Tagus river docks with its “à la mode” restaurants and hype night clubs. In short it is a perfect starting point for your tourist activities in Lisbon or just for spending an unforgettable time in the seven hill city.
The area surrounding the apartment:
If you come to Lisbon, you cannot miss Alfama, one of the most picturesque and historical medieval neighborhoods, a mesh of small tiny streets, cul-de-sacs and stone stairs. It has a mixed population, people of all ages, “true” lisboners or lost tourists come to visit or to hear Fado. Since cars can hardly enter, it is a quiet neighborhood that keeps its old world charm. Like in many other places in Lisbon, you’ll also find some of the most spectacular viewpoints of the Tagus river and the city. You can also still find various forms of traditional commerce, as well as nice quaint little restaurants and bars. From the apartment you can walk to the majority of the most popular sightseeing destinations, such as the “Castelo de S. Jorge” the “Sé” or the “Baixa Pombalina”. For transportation, walk, or go down to Santa Apolónia the main train station and its recently opened metro station, or use the popular tram n°28 that zigzags through Alfama and pursues its trip up and down the hills of Lisbon. There are several parking facilities nearby.
The apartment:
This nice two bedroom accommodation has the name of Jardim do Tabaco, in remembrance of the proximity of the tobacco customs, here tobacco commercial activity has existed in Lisbon Harbour since the 17th century. The flat is located on the second floor of the annex of a convent dedicated to Senhor Jesus da Boa Nova, of baroque architecture (Mafra school) and finished in 1748 just before the 1755 earthquake that partially destroyed Lisbon.
But enough of history ! Here you find every comfort for your stay ! With windows opening onto the Tagus river and the street bordered by magnificent trees there is a large living room with sofa, armchairs, a large TV set and of course like in any other room the walls covered of azulejos, those 18th century blue and yellow ceramic tiles. The dining room has a large wooden table with red chairs and also features the same ancient wood floors and wood painted ceilings.
Here a family or a party of four people have plenty of space with the two separate bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other one with twin beds and a nice stone fireplace. The bathroom features a shower and luxury towels for your own use. The kitchen is fully equipped for you to prepare all meals from breakfast to dinner unless you prefer to go out in the many nearby restaurants or fado houses.
