What to see in Berlin

Berlin is a great city to explore on foot, a city where there is a little bit of history on every corner. You can start by exploring the squares: Alexanderplatz, Potsdamer platz and Gendarmenmarkt, three locations where fighting marked the city. The Brandenburg Gate, a universal symbol of peace, and the Norman Foster designed German Parliament are two of the must see sights in Berlin. Art and history lovers have the option of spending the day on Museum Island, where five of the most important museums are.

When you visit Checkpoint Charlie, the military checkpoint between East and West Berlin, don’t forget to have a look at the remains of the wall located a block away. The largest remaining section of wall, the so called ‘East Side Gallery’, is covered in graffiti and messages of peace and is another of Berlin’s famous sights.

The Holocaust Monument, made up of 2711 concrete blocks of differing heights is a stark reminder of the horrors of the past, a moving but obligatory visit for anyone visiting Berlin.

Shopping in Berlin

Alexanderplatz is the place to go shopping in Berlin. Here you can find shopping centres and lots of other shops selling everything you could possibly need. If you prefer independent designers, antiques and art galleries then the Mitte neighbourhood is where you will find them. Berlin is also home to a lot of markets among them Strasse des 17 Juni in Boxhagner Square which is full of clothes, accessories, artisanal products and other goods.

At first glance Berlin may not appear to be a good destination for children, but that is not the case. There are numerous activities to keep the children amused. For example you can start the day at the zoo, always a favourite. Lego fanatics can visit the Legoland theme park to truly stimulate their imagination. Those with a sweet tooth can visit the Ritter Sport chocolate store where the children can prepare their own chocolates.

The AquaDom (in the Radisson Hotel) is the world’s largest cylindrical aquarium; the children will be very impressed. The aquarium contains over 600 different species of fish and best of all there is a lift in the centre. You can also visit the Machmit Museum, designed entirely by children for children; there is a maze, themed exhibitions, workshops and more.
