Amsterdam guide for children
Amsterdam is a fantastic city for both young and old. Children can enjoy one of Amsterdam’s wonderful museums or explore the parks and playgrounds of the city. They can discover the history behind the canals, small streets and majestic canal houses. By boat, tram, foot or bicycle the children will experience the ancient VOC atmosphere all over again. Besides all of this, there are also other amazing attractions that make Amsterdam a children’s heaven.
Below we suggest some ideas for a great day out with children. We included parks, children museums, playgrounds and other attractions the city has to offer. Don’t forget to always ask for a “kinder korting” (child’s discount) before purchasing tickets. Many museums and attraction will give discounts for children below the age of 12.
Museums & Attractions
NEMO is the largest science centre in the Netherlands. With five floors full of exciting things to do and discover, it is the perfect place for young and old with and inquiring mind. Everything in NEMO is connected to science and technology. Exhibitions, theatre performances, films, workshops and demonstrations all for children and their supervisors. You will hear, smell feel and see how the world works. After a visit to NEMO, you will know why bridges are so strong, what you will look like in 30 years, how to purify water and much more.

Come and stroll in nature’s oasis in the midst of the bustling city. See more than 200 species of trees and more than 900 species of animals. Admire the gardens with their flowering bulbs in spring and study their rich vegetation in summer and autumn.

Anne Frank Huis
This museum is build inside the house where Anne Frank and her family hided from the Germans during
World War 2. The Anne Frank House is very interesting and educational for children from 10 years old as well as for elder people. Anne Frank, who became famous for her detailed diary, died in a concentration camp. This museum shows her diary and gives you an overall view on what Amsterdam was like during the second World War.

Canal cruise by boat
One of the things you can do when visiting Amsterdam with a child is take a canal cruise. The many canals of Amsterdam were originally built as the “highways” of the city transporting passengers and goods throughout the city and surrounding towns. There are a variety of custom and package deals, ranging from basic city tours to elaborate dinner cruises. It is one of the best ways to experience the real Amsterdam with children.

There are lots of outdoor attractions and parks in Amsterdam. Children can play around in the green at: Het Vondelpark, Amstelpark, Vliegenbos, Oosterpark, Westerpark, Sloterplas, Sloterpark and Het Amsterdamse bos. In the summer watersport activities take place at the Sloterplas. The Vondelpark contains of lots of green and many playgrounds for kids.
