Grachtengordel
The Amsterdam Canal Belt dates back from the 17th century and surrounds the old city centre. The “Belt” was build built so that VOC-ships packed with treasury could easily supply the city. The Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht are the three canals that surround the old centre to the Amstel river. Aside each canal are trees and roads that separate the canal houses from the water. Streets going to and coming from the centre cross the district, but hardly disturb the peace. The beautiful canal houses that Amsterdam is so famous for can be found everywhere here. Next to one of these canals the Artis Zoo is located, a beautiful zoo that is recommendable for children and animal lovers. The historical Anne Frank House and also the amazing flower market are also situated in this district. Cozy cafés and restaurants are on every street corner. Many famous neighborhoods like ‘de Jordaan’ can be found on the Canal Belt. Visitors love the charming canals and the friendly atmosphere that makes the Canal belt so unique.
