Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the Balearic Islands. Although it might seem a small town at first, Palma offers all the advantages and comforts of a large urban centre that is full of history and elegance. It is situated in the middle of the Bahía de Palma and it shaped like a fan with the Old Town surrounded by the Avenidas at the bottom and main roads stretching out from the Avenidas to the ring road in a half circle. The many invasions Mallorca has suffered through the centuries have had a great effect on the cuisine, creating one with wide-ranging and varied tastes. Not to be missed are the menus of fish and locally harvested vegetables. Finding a good place to eat will not be a problem. In Palma alone there are more than 1.200 restaurants! For those with a more heightened interest in the Gastronomic culture, a visit to the “Cellars” can be recommended, authentic old warehouses where you can sample the delights of the local cuisine.

Not to be missed are the Cathedral, the Almudaina Palace, the Arab Baths, the Bellver Castle and the Contemporary Art Museum.

Although the city of Palma is the commercial and cultural centre of Mallorca, the depth of history, culture and nightlife often takes visitors by surprise. Palma offers a full program of concerts, exhibitions, festivals, ballet and theatre productions that should appeal to most tastes. The forthcoming cultural itinerary is published in advance on the Palma City Council web site or alternatively can be picked up locally at any of the Tourist Information Offices throughout the city.
