"Jasper Johns. The traces of memory” in the IVAM, Valencia
Jasper Johns is one of the most recognised contemporary artists in the world. His use of familiar icons such as American flags, maps, targets, letters and numbers was influenced by his unique “Take an object” perspective which came to have a powerful influence on subsequent sculptures and paintings. Together with Rauschenberg, this American artist is considered to be one of the forerunners of American pop-art, and is also famous for his paintings, sculptures, drawings and stage sets for choreographer Merce Cunningham.
Despite being widely recognised for his work in Europe, single-themed exhibitions by this pop-art artist have so far been unheard of, until now. The Modern Art Museum in Valencia has managed to gather up to 91 of his pieces for their Jasper Johns exhibition, “The traces of memory”, which will be open to the public from the 1st of February until the 24th of April.
This is a great opportunity to see 20 pieces from his private collection, as well as 23 oil paintings, 9 of his sculptures, and 59 techniques on paper comprising the Jasper Johns exhibition in the Valencia Modern Art Museum. “The traces of memory” exhibition displays letters and numbers which havebeen a recurring theme in his work over his 50 year contemporary art career.
