Walks and hiking routes in Mallorca

Mallorca is renowned for being very beautiful with rolling hills and mountains, green pastures, sunny coasts and wild landscapes. Given that the Mallorca Serra de Tramuntana Mountains are a recently declared World Heritage Site, what better way to discover this stunning island than going on one of the many walks and hiking routes on offer. There is something for everyone with walks ranging from one hour routes to seven hour all-day treks. Whatever you’re into, here are our suggestions.

Soller and Biniaraix – On this circular walk, you will be taken through the prettiest spots in Soller’s famous Citrus Valley. With magnificent scenery and soaring mountains in the backdrop, this little route is perfect for those of you looking for something a little more leisurely. There are also longer walks on offer for those of you interested, which you can find out about at Tramuntana Tours in Soller (Carrer de Sa Lluna, 72). Where:  Soller. When: All year round. Difficulty level: Easy. Time: 1 ½ hours approx. Price: Free.

Salt d’es Freu – This 7km circular walk will take you through green pastures, oak forest, and past the stunning Salt d’es Freu waterfalls prior to a sharp ascent to the top of the Pas de s´Estelo offering stunning views of the town below. You can leave your car on the road just before the town of Orient and take the beaten track (Freu) leading up to the forest. Where: Orient. When: All year round. Difficulty level: Easy. Time: 3 hours approx. Price: Free.

Roca Blanca and Fumat – This 6km circular walk involves mountain walking and some slight scrambling! Hiking enthusiasts will be treated to the very best of the Formentor Peninsular as they make their way to the tip of the island and the peak of Fumat. Then a drop down to the old lighthouse track leading to Cala Figuera beach follows. Finally, a visit to the Albercuitz Watchtower, is recommended. Where: Roca Blanca. When: All year round. Difficulty level: Moderate (shorter but some climbing involved). Time: 4 hours approx. Price: Free.

Puig Roig walk – This comprises a 20km hike through wild limestone scenery, vultures, smugglers paths and cave houses on one of the tallest mountains on the island of Mallorca. Highlights of the excursion include the stairway to famous Corniche, the coast where you will witness black vultures, fascinating cave houses at Coscona and finally the climb to Lluc Monastery marking the end of your journey where you can take a well needed rest. Where: Mossa Farm to Lluc Monastery. When: Sundays only. Difficulty level: Moderate (long but relatively flat). Time: 7 hours approx. Price: Free.
