Special weekend activities for the New Year in Barcelona 2011

Dong, dong, dong….! You can almost hear the bells ringing in the New Year. Tomorrow 2011 will come to an end and 2012 will start in the hope that the ancient Mayan prophecies don’t come true. Either way, whilst you’re preparing your grapes and whipping on your red tanga to bring you good luck for the New Year take a look at our suggestions for this weekend in Barcelona.
Friday the 30th of December
CHILDHOOD FAIR – The little ones deserve to end 2011 having fun. At this festival they will be able to mount bikes used to power Scalextric, hop on a mechanical bull, step inside a soap bubble, try the latest Xbox 360, jump in a ball pool, enjoy numerous shows and do lots of other things that will make you want to be a child again. Where: Fira de Barcelona (Pl. de l’Univers. Montjuïc). When: Up until the 4th of January 2012. Price: 10 euro.
NEW YEAR CONCERT – Inspired by the annual concerts traditionally celebrated in Vienna, the Strauss Festival Orchestra will be performing a selection of the best waltzes, marches and polkas by John Strauss. The joyful notes of the Radetzky march, the Blue Danube waltz and the Kaiser-Waltzer will be accompanied by a ballet with stunning costumes. Where: Barcelona Auditorium (C/ Lepant, 150). When: 9pm. Price: From 24 to 45 euro.
Saturday the 31st of December
NOSE-MAN FUN RUN – The Barcelona San Silvestre run brings 2011 to a close with a record participation of 10,000 professional and amateur athletes. To give the run a little festive touch, many will be sporting big noses in tribute to L’home dels nassos (the Man of Noses), a Catalan mythological character who only comes out on the 31st of December and has as many noses as the days of the year. Where: C/ Selva de Mar - Pl. de Ramón Calsina. When: 5:30pm. Price: 13 euro with prior inscription.
TORRE AGBAR – One of Barcelona’s new icons, Agbar Tower, will have special lights in celebration of the New Year which will flicker on and off in time with the bells ringing in the New Year. This light and colour show, which can also be watched on TV, will continue well into the early hours of the morning creating a beautiful chromatic spectacle on the Barcelona skyline. Where: Agbar Tower. (Av. Diagonal, 209). When: From 11:59pm to 1am. Price: Free.
RAZZ TILL THE WORLD ENDS – A pure Razzmatazz style end of year party with the greatest hits of the year making sure your feet don’t leave the dance floor. This year you also be able to eat your grapes and have cava in the club so you can carry on dancing straight after welcoming in 2012. Where: Sala Razzmatazz (C/. Pamplona, 88). When and price: Entrance at 10:30pm with New Year’s Eve party, grapes, a glass of cava, t-shirt and 2 drinks included 45 euro (pre-sale 38 euro). ELEPHANT END OF YEAR – Amongst the many New Year parties there will be in the bars, pubs and clubs in Barcelona, we would like to mention this one. Visitors can celebrate in the New Year in a more relaxed way whilst sipping a cocktail in an elegant and exotic space amongst gardens and elephant sculptures. Where: Elephant Club (Pg. dels Til·lers,1). When: Doors will open at 12:30pm on the 1st of January. Price: 45 euro with 2 drinks included (35 euro advance ticket).
Sunday the 1st of January
THE FIRST BATHE OF THE YEAR – There is nothing better then a dip in the sea to help get over a hangover. In addition to the health benefits derived from a little exercise in cold water, participants will receive a cup of hot soup and a certificate for their efforts. Fun and a good atmosphere guaranteed.
