Things to do this weekend in Barcelona

Christmas has finally arrived. This weekend the world comes to a standstill, or almost. For a couple of days many museums, exhibition halls and shops will be closing their doors to take a well earned break. The majority will be getting together with their family and friends to enjoy a huge feast of seafood, cava, turron and we hope a good laugh. As always, in addition to the Christmas activities on offer, there are still things to do this Christmas weekend in Barcelona.
Friday the 23rd of December
SPLENDA – Mag Lari will be presenting an astonishing show inspired by the imagination, music and moves of Michael Jackson. Accompanied by a corps de ballet, this well known illusionist will be starring in this amazing magic show featuring surprises, comedy, illusions, special effects and pyrotechnics. Where: Teatro Tívoli (C/Casper, 8-10). When: Up until the 8th of January. Price: From 27 to 45 euro.

UNIQUE HOUSES – A chance to discover the history of Barcelona on a more personal level through the influential people that lived in the city from the 18th to the 20th century and the houses they lived in. Palau Moxó, Palau Moja, the house of Manuel Rocamora, Palau Güell and many other mansions and cultural institutions will be opening their doors this weekend. Where: Different buildings in Barcelona. When: You have to book a place on a guided tour by email to casessingulars@casessingulars.com or by calling + 34 670466260. Price: 10 euro.

Saturday the 24th of December
SONG OF THE SIBYL – Sing, sing. The Song of the Sibyl, a declared Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, comprises a medieval piece sung in church at Christmas. It comprises a prophecy of the Apocalypse and the oldest Gregorian chant in Europe. You can listen to it before the traditional Midnight Mass. Where: Santa Maria de Gràcia (C/Sant Pere Màrtir, 5). When: 11:30pm. Price: Free.

LAST CHANCE TO GET LAID – A party directed at those of you who need a break from eating and the warm family atmosphere. A different way of celebrating Christmas Eve with dancing, a few drinks and DJs with music that you can dance the night away to. Where: La Ratonera (Pl. de la Gardunya,3). When: From 10:30pm. Price: Free.

Sunday the 25th of December
COPA NADAL – A 100 year old competition held in the open waters at Barcelona port. This nine-category contest involves swimming in the cold winter water from Portal de la Pau to the Columbus monument. Where: Passarel-la Rambla del Mar (Pl. Portal de la Pau, 6). When: Swim meet at 10:30am, start of the competition at 11:30am. Price: Members free, non-members 12 euro.

TERRAT PACK – The best stand up comedians in Terrat! Andreu Buenafuente, José Corbacho, Berto Romero and Ana Morgade have come to Barcelona this Christmas. And they’re ready to pull out the laughs because there is no better way of coming to the end of the year than enjoying a good laugh and seeing the funny side of life. Where: Teatre Coliseum. When: Up until the 8th of December. Price: Approx. 6 euro.

Monday the 26th of December
THE ARTIST – What better way of making the most of your Boxing Day afternoon than heading down to the cinema to digest all that excess Christmas food. This film has already taken the Cannes, San Sebastian and other European festivals by storm. It comprises a tribute to 20s cinema and the beginnings of Hollywood. Romance, action, laughter, tears…..which in the age of 3D stands out for its own merits, silent and in black and white. Where: Different cinemas across Barcelona. When: From the 16th of December. Price: 8 euro approx.

Be good, drink lots and be merry!
