Barcelona Carnival will be hitting the streets on the 5th of March for a real party comprising the locals last opportunity to let-loose before Lent begins and the end of the indulgences. The events are starting a little later this year as Easter falls in April, however it promises to be just as good, if not better than last year's edition.

Barcelona Carnival 2011

The carnival parade will kick off at 8pm on Avinguda del Paral-lel, although visitors can expect various carnival related activities to start on the Thursday prior to the event, which will conclude with the burial of the sardine.

The grand parade, lasting approximately 2 hours and comprising over 60 adorned passing wagons and floats bearing the carnival theme will make its merry way along Avinguda del Paral-lel for 1.2 miles. Thousands of tourists and locals gather in the district of Sants to watch this colourful and cheerful event, as well as admire the stunning floats, the creative masks and costumes, and listen to the witty musical groups.

There will also be smaller parades making their way through the smaller districts in the city, and further activities and events which will all be posted on the City Hall website.

This is also a perfect opportunity to try some typical Catalan dishes as there will food eating events, plus on the first day of the celebrations there will be a Spanish omelette competition whereby the most original and best looking creation will be awarded a prize!

To fully enjoy all the Carnival there is nothing better than renting a Barcelona apartment which will give you all the freedom you need so you come and go when you please.
