Typical Mediterranean landscapes, small medieval villages, excellent dive sites, eating paella by the sea and a lively nightlife…a holiday on the Costa Brava will definitely recharge your batteries.
The gastronomy of the Costa Brava is primarily based on what comes from the sea. The prawns from Palamós and anchovies from La Escala are particularly famous, in fact there is even a museum dedicated to anchovies in the beautiful town of La Escala.
A traditional and famous dish is “suquet”, a delicious fish soup. Other common regional Catalan dishes are “trinxat” a hearty winter dish made from cabbage, potato and bacon, chicken with scampi, paella and cured meats.
The principal attraction of the Costa Brava is discovering the coves hidden along the rocky shoreline and swimming in the crystal clear waters. The Medas Islands with their rich and varied sea life provide excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities.
The fishing village of Cadaques is one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages on the Costa Brava, here you can find the House-Museum of Salvador Dali containing a collection of the artist’s personal belongings. Other sights to visit in the Costa Brava include the Greek and Roman ruins in Empúries, the historic centre of Girona, and the medieval villages all along the coast Begur, Pals, Peralada, castello d’Empuries and Besalu.
In all of the villages of the Costa Brava there are shops and small supermarkets where you can stock up on supplies for your holiday. In general there aren’t many big shopping centres in the Costa Brava, the villages preferring to maintain the relaxed atmosphere for which they are famous. There are large shopping centres in Figueres and Roses if you need a quick shopping fix.
A holiday on the Costa Brava is sure to be a hit with the children. Apart from the magnificent beaches and all the activities they offer, there are various water parks in the area. There are also plenty of adventure sports for the adrenalin junkies from driving a go kart to skydiving. Another great activity for children is to take them on the glass bottom boats around the Medes Islands; from here they can explore the underwater world staying dry.
Despite the peaceful laid back family atmosphere of the Costa Brava it does have a very lively nightlife. When the sun goes down the doors of a number of nightclubs open in the towns of Roses and Lloret de Mar. You can even try your luck at the tables of the Perelada Casino and the Gran Casino de la Costa Brava. Of course it goes without saying you can spend the evening at one of the many longue bars enjoying a quiet drink after dinner or join in the fun of the local fiestas listening to the typical ‘habaneras’ while sipping on some ‘ron cremat’.
