Catalan cuisine is based on the famous Mediterranean diet: fish, fresh vegetables, meat, olive oil and pulses…It is a very rich and varied cuisine with touches of French influence and it is not unusual to mix meat and seafood in the same dish.
Typical Catalan dishes include “fricando” (a beef and mushroom stew), “esqueixada” (cod, endive, olives and romesco sauce), snails, “escalivada” (roasted aubergine and peppers), cannelloni and seafood casserole. Not forgetting to mention the extremely popular “pa amb tomaquet”( bread with tomato, olive oil and salt) accompanied with cheese and cold cuts. For a sweet finish to any meal try “crema catalana” or “mel i mato” (fresh cheese with honey).
